Where History Meets Hospitality
About Zeigler's
Four generations of one family, serving food, drink and a place to rest in Windber, PA since 1910
Business Builds Community
That's what our family has believed for more than a century. Since 1910, the Zeigler family has welcomed Windber to its tables, first at the Grand Central Hotel and then at the Henderson House on Graham Avenue. Generations of neighbors have shared a meal, raised a glass and celebrated life's big moments with us.
Our History
The Grand Central Hotel (1910)
Our story begins in 1910, when Frank Tarr, an Englishman and hotel proprietor, purchased the Grand Central Hotel. In those early days the hotel didn't even have a street number. Folks simply knew it as the hotel on 15th Street.
Frank's daughter, Dessie Tarr, married Henry Zeigler, and the Tarr and Zeigler families became one. Henry and Dessie had two children, Frank T. Zeigler and Evelyn.
A New Home at the Henderson House (1934-1942)
When Frank Tarr passed away in 1934, the business went to Frank T. Zeigler. In 1942 the family sold the Grand Central Hotel to the Windber Bakery and bought the Henderson House from the Murphy brothers, who had run it for most of its life.
The Henderson House was built in 1899, just two years after Windber was founded in 1897. It has been the Zeigler family's home in business ever since.
A Family Business (1942-2009)
Frank T. Zeigler and his wife, Anna Younga, raised three boys and five girls, and the family's own dinners were held right here in the dining room.
In 1973 Frank T. handed the business to Frank H. Zeigler, and he kept lending a hand until he passed away in 1976. Frank H. ran the business on his own as owner and manager until 1997, when the family incorporated it, with Frank H. as President, Robert S. Zeigler as Vice President and Thomas M. Zeigler as Treasurer. Anna passed away that same year.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future (2009-Today)
When Frank H. Zeigler passed away in 2009, Robert S. Zeigler became President and Thomas M. Zeigler became Vice President. Robert set to work renovating the bar, the restaurant and the rooms upstairs, giving the old building new life while keeping its character.
After Robert's passing in 2023, Thomas M. Zeigler took the lead, and he runs the business today. From 2023 to 2024 Thomas carried the work forward, putting in a new kitchen to replace one that had served the business for more than a century and improving the outside of the building.
Family Dining, Kid Friendly
Our family has always eaten together in this dining room, and yours is welcome to as well. Zeigler's is a kid friendly Windber restaurant where everyone from grandparents to little ones can sit down to a good meal.
